Scoring

The three sections of the test are scored independently. Each of the three scores range from 200 to 800. The total test score ranges from 600 to 2400. The average score for each section is about 500, and thus the total average score is around 1500. There are two steps in the grading process:

Step 1. Calculating raw scores.

The raw scores for each section are calculated based on the number of points gained from correct answers and lost from incorrect answers. Here is how different types of questions are graded:

Multiple-choice questions
• Correct answer - 1 point
• No answer - nothing is subtracted
• Incorrect answer - 1/4 point subtracted
Student-produced response
• Correct answer - 1 point
• No answer - nothing is subtracted
• Incorrect answer - nothing is subtracted
Essay
• From 2 to 12 points
• O if blank or off-topic

The raw scores are rounded to the nearest whole number (e.g. 43.25 is rounded to 43, 43.50 to 44).

Step 2. Converting raw scores.

For each of the three sections of the test, there is a conversion table used to convert the raw scores into a number between 200 and 800. This process is called equating. The conversion table is adjusted from test to test in order to standardize the tests. In addition to the scaled scores, a percentile ranking is assigned to each test, which shows the percentage of students who scored less that this particular test.

The following is the Mathematics Conversion Table showing the ranges of scaled scores*:

 Raw Score Scaled Score Raw Score Scaled Score Raw Score Scaled Score Raw Score Scaled Score 54 800 39 570-650 24 460-520 9 330-430 53 750-800 38 560-640 23 460-520 8 320-420 52 720-800 37 550-630 22 450-510 7 310-410 51 700-780 36 550-630 21 440-500 6 290-390 50 690-770 35 540-620 20 430-490 5 280-380 49 680-740 34 530-610 19 430-490 4 270-370 48 670-730 33 520-600 18 420-480 3 260-360 47 660-720 32 520-600 17 410-470 2 240-340 46 640-700 31 520-580 16 400-460 1 230-330 45 630-690 30 510-570 15 400-460 0 210-310 44 620-680 29 500-560 14 390-450 -1 200-290 43 620-680 28 490-550 13 380-440 -2 200-270 42 610-670 27 490-550 12 360-440 -3 200-250 41 600-660 26 480-540 11 350-430 -4 200-230 40 580-660 25 470-530 10 340-420 -5 200-210
